semiotics first image

First image: Signifier – The picture contains school books and folders sprawled on the floor. Signified – Folders and school books shows that this is a student’s room. The folders are all over the floor it shows that the student has quite a care-free attitude towards their school work. Also, because the folders have been left on the floor and not put on the desk it emphasizes further how the student isn’t really bothered about school. The sign is iconic as the image shows that the school work as just been casually left on the floor highlighting the student is not bothered about school work.

The rules

1- Write like a lawyer not a detective. 2- Nothing you see or hear in a Tv drama is there by accident. 3- Look for the binary opposites and conflict within the representation. 4- One side of the representational issue will be presented in an emphathetic and one side of the issue will be shown as dominant. 5- All representations are mediated (filtered).

Camera shots

- long shot:

- birds eye view: shows the power of the person as it is looking down at them. Also it shows the view from the person eyes.

- worms eye view: shows the vulnerability of the person as they have to look up to some one. Also shows they may be less powerful. Again it shows the view through the persons eyes.

Good phrases to use in an essay

- we are presented with two opposistional worlds divided by age.

- ... Is privileged throughout the clip ( the main focus )

- she seems at odd with her surroundings.

- it is through this opposition that the audience is initialy asked to emphasize with amy.

- the use of this vehichle subverts (going against the norm) the traditional notion of a teenager driving a small car as their first vehicle.

- the next scene once dispels that myth.

- the first time she is represented as a girl who prehaps stereotypically needs saving from the perils of adulthood and facing up ones own responsibilities.

- one which shouts of traditional and formality.

- the oak room is noticeable in that it is the only location which shows absence of youth.

- the formality of this room which arguably is reminiscent of a court room confirms to the representation that with age comes wisdom.

- the initial high angle establishing shot of the workets and their tools represents the sense of community we feel when we consider the adults within the clip.

- it is edited in a way that paul always appears in two shot whereas the headteacher is allowed to occupy shots purely on his own. This again suggest a hierachy of age - suggesting the older you are the more power and respect you command.

- we witness the stereotypical response of 'i hate you you' diegetically delivered by amy before she runs out of shoot.

Monarch of the glen, first essay

Monarch of the glen explores two opposing representations of age which supports Levi-Straus theory of conflict between binary opposites. I will be discussing how youth is represented in the clip as vulnerable, powerless and imature and also maturity, that is presented as being powerful, wise and stern.
When Amy crashes the car into her headteachers car she quickly hides behind the two males. This conveys her vulnerability. Also the camera looks down at Amy when she is getting told of this highlights the lack of power she has compared to the other characters. This confirms that Amy is just a child who needs protecting.
On the othe hand, when the headteacher is telling Amy off the camera looks up at him, emphasizing the power he must have. His stiff posture shows his confidence in himself. Showing viewers his stern nature.
The director highlights Amys imaturity when we find out she has run away. The camera is shot from outside the window she has escaped out of. This shows that her child like mind has come into place and will probably get her into more trouble. Her irrational thinking portrays her youth and supports Levi-Straus theory of conflict between binary opposites.
In clip the headmaster is poured in a posh goblet type glass. Brandy has connotations of maturty as brandy is seen as and old fashioned drink because no one really drinks it anymore.
